In Contact Improvisation or Contact Improv (CI) dance, partners improvise their movement while maintaining a mutual point of contact. Each dancer responds to the momentum, direction, intention, weight, rise, fall, speed, roll and counterbalance (just to name a few qualities) of each other's movements, all while focusing on the ever changing mutual contact point. Developed by a community of dancers in 1972 including Steve Paxton, Nita Little, Nancy Stark Smith, Lisa Nelson, Daniel Lepkoff, and many others, the form quickly gained popularity and is now practiced throughout the world. Contact Improv is about maintaining complete awareness of the present moment while dancing in contact with another who is doing the same, and ranges from extremely acrobatic and high-flying to delicately soft and earth-grounded. Practicing CI increases a dancer's ability to maintain complete and unwavering awareness of their body and surroundings by virtue of its unpredictability and dynamic qualities. Besides all of that, it's really a lot of fun!
