Reservations & Joining Others

Except for Ken's Lake Campground, it is imperative that you make your reservation as early as possible.

Once you are confirmed to attend the Workshop and/or Jam, please let us know (we'll ask you in an email, too) where you plan stay and if you have a reservation and space for others to join you. Our Work Exchange (WEX) crew will help coordinate available places to stay.

Up-The-Creek (UTC) Campground

Description - It's just 5 blocks (takes about 10 to 15 minutes to walk) to the MARC. This campground has showers and is walking distance to everything in Moab. It's not as much of an "outdoors" experience as Ken's lake, but it's very pleasant for being right "in" town. See their website for nice pictures and more details.

Reservations/Cost: The UTC management has decided for our 2012 Jam (May 24-28) to allocate the back area of their campground for our group. You will still need to contact them to make your reservation. When you make your reservation, make sure to indicate that you are with the "dance jam" group. With this special arrangement, each camper will be charged $15/day regardless of the number of people in each tent. (You can view their regular prices here.) Campsites fill very quickly for this time of the year, so make your reservations ASAP. (Last updated February 9, 2012.)

TIPS: 1) A bike makes the getting to/from the MARC really quick. 2) You are in close quarters so you might consider bringing earplugs.

Ken's Lake Campground

Description - At 10 miles away from the MARC, you'll need to either have a car or arrange a ride. There are no showers or drinking water. Each camping spot has a picnic table, fire ring, and room for 3 - 5 tents. Pit toilets are nearby. There's a clear creek, waterfall, and lake, all within easy walking distance. A dip in the water is a morning ritual for many. Sunrise and sunset are lovely. Great hiking and mountain biking begins right at your tent-door. It's a 30 minute walk to petroglyphs. Their website can be found here.

Reservations/Cost - Ken's lake does not take reservations. Campsites are available on a first come, first serve basis. Beginning Wednesday May 23, Alicia will do her best to reserve enough sites for those who want to stay at Ken's Lake (through Monday May 28). In the past we have reserved approximately 2 sites during the workshop for campers to share, and 4-5 sites for people to share during the jam. The Moab Jam will ask for a contribution of $3/person per night. This fee can be paid when you arrive to Moab and complete registration. Please let us know if you want to stay at Ken's Lake Campground so we have a count of how many shared campsites are needed.

Which sites? - (Click here to show more info) Check the bulletin noard at the entrance of the campground, or drive the loop (there's only one long loop) and look for blue Moab Jam signs. Please set up your tent only in one of our designated campsites. If you use a site not designated for the Moab Jam, it is your responsibility to pay full payment for the site via the kiosk.

Campsite Regulations - (Click here to show more info) Each campsite at Ken's Lake can take a maximum of 5 tents (10 people). Some sites are smaller and cannot accommodate this many tents. Cars must be parked in the gravel area of each campsite. Please do not park on the road, on the Crypotgamic soil or in the tenting area.

Pitching Your Tent - (Click here to show more info) Please pitch your tent on the sandy area of the tent sites. It is very important we do not harm the fragile desert environment by pitching our tents on or walking on the cryptogamic soil or on desert plants.

Cryptogamic Soil - (Click here to show more info) Includes cyanobacteria, one of the oldest known life forms, as well as mosses and lichens among other living organisms. Cryptogamic soil is crucial in helping stabilize the fragile desert soil from wind and rain erosion and helps hold in precious limited water and nutrients for desert plants. When we walk or drive on this soil it can take up to up to 250 YEARS!!!! for it to return. If you are not familiar with this soil ask. Let's all help remind each other to take good care of this beautiful desert environment by NOT WALKING ON or PITCHING OUR TENTS on CRYPTOGAMIC SOIL. For more information on cryptogamic soil, please visit this page.

Rides To and From Campground - (Click here to show more info) If you are staying at Kens Lake Campground, it may be possible to get rides to and from the studio in town. It is best to arrange rides beforehand with others who will be staying there. We need enough cars (with willing drivers) to deal with shuttles. Please plan to contribute gas $ to the drivers.

Check Out Time - (Click here to show more info) Moab jam campsites are reserved through Monday, May 30 @ noon. Everyone must be checked out by noon on Monday. If you stay at Ken's Lake Campground beyond May 30 @ noon, you need to sign up for a site and pay the fee at the kiosk.

Tips - (Click here to show more info) 1) Many who stay at Ken's Lake Campground, purchase a shower at either the Lazy Lizard Hostel or Up-The-Creek campground on their way to or from the MARC. Please be kind to your hosts and ensure good Karma for all CI dancers by paying the requested shower fee in advance. 2) It can be windy at Ken's Lake Campground, so be sure to stake down your tent and you might consider bringing earplugs.

Lazy Lizard Hostel, Other Downtown Moab Campgrounds, Hotels, Motels & More

If you want to stay in a room, the least expensive is the Lazy Lizard Hostel. Being a tourist town, Moab has lots of hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and condos for rent. However, the spring is a very popular time to be in Moab so be sure to book your room ASAP!

The Lazy Lizard Hostel is about 2 miles from the MARC. Call (435) 259-6057 or visit Lazy Lizard Hostel.

Canyonlands Campground (555 S Main St., 800-522-6848, canyonlandsrv.com) - This campsite is primarily an RV campground, though you can choose a tent site at the very back of the campground, across the river, as far away from the RVs as possible. There are also cabins, though they're right in the middle of all the RVs. The campground is right in town, there's a swimming pool, and the cost is $25 per night for tent camping.

Ron's Pack Creek Campground (1520 Murphy Ln #6, 435-259-2982, packcreekcampground.com) - This campsite is a couple miles from downtown Moab and costs $17.50 per night. The tent sites are located next to a creek. No one I know has ever stayed there, so let us know how it is if you decide to give it a try!

For other accomodations, call the Moab Tourism office at (800) 635-6622 or visit The Moab Information Site. There are cottages, condos, hotels, motels, and more.
